Jan Styka's The Crucifixion portrays that poignant moment before the earthly death of Jesus.  In the spirit of Poland's liberation from Russia, Styka was inspired by the renowned pianist and future President of Poland, Ignace Paderewski, for whom "freedom" had a spiritual meaning.  Commissioned in 1894 for the painting, Styka travelled to Jerusalem to prepare sketches, and to Rome, where his palette was blessed by Pope Leo XIII.  Jan Styka's masterpiece is presented in the Hall of The Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California.
