L. A. Shafer created this stylized version of a Marine Corps anti-aircraft crew loading and firing. The anti-aircraft gun was also known as the “sky-gun,” referring to its purpose of protecting the skies and shooting down enemy aircraft. When the United States entered the war in April 1917, the destructive force of air power was well-known. Shafer’s poster was distributed in July 1917 to recruiting stations across America.
