Jesse Gleason served under 1stLt Clifton Cates in 1918 in the 96th Company, 2d Battalion, 6th Marines, 4th Marine Brigade. In most Marine units, there is someone who can draw or paint. Gleason, who had studied art, was a natural to create a door sign for the company commander. His skill for design and creativity is reflected in using hard-to-find materials in the sign he made. Cates would become the 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps, 1948-51.
