 In this scene, infantrymen attack German positions with rifle and bayonet. Fouqueray captures the ferocity of the battle as the central figure is meeting the enemy in a direct charge. “Lusitania! Lusitania!,” or a similar phrase, was sometimes used as a battle cry, referring to the tragic sinking of the RMS Lusitania on 7 May 1915 by German submarines.
