20 - Ronald Roane and Scout Dog “Hobo”

Jonathen Abel Collection, Marine Corps Archives and Special Collections Private First Class Ronald T. Roane and his 75-pound German shepherd arrived in Vietnam in the spring of 1968. Roane and Hobo were a scout dog team, credited with uncovering enemy positions and preventing casualties. In late 1968, they were part of Operation Mead River,13 miles southwest of Da Nang, which involved some 5,000 Marines. They were members of Scout Dog Platoon, 3d Military Police Battalion, Force Logistic Command. The photographer labeled this 1969 photograph of Roan and Hobo “Not So Secret Weapon.”
