Private First Class Grady Hogue of Brounsboro, Texas, posed astride a pony indigenous to Okinawa shortly after the Marines landed on the island in April 1945. Marines did not ride horses to battle on Okinawa, but this Texan Marine could not resist getting back on a horse.
There are two breeds of horses native to the Ryukyu Islands, the Miyako and the Yonaguni. These small horses were historically used for riding and light draft work by farmers. Their populations declined after World War II with increased mechanization, and both breeds are considered endangered.
