Among the many Marine Corps uniform plates created by artist-historian John H. Magruder III is this one, portraying the typical kit of the 4th Marines in Northern China in 1938. This China Marine is at a full gallop.
John Magruder (1917-72) was a World War II Marine combat veteran.
In the early 1950s, he was recalled to active duty to oversee a Marine Corps museum at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, a predecessor organization to the National Museum of the Marine Corps. He retired as a colonel in 1969. At the time of his death, he led the Smithsonian Institution’s National Armed Forces Museum Advisory Board.
