At the outset of World War I, the Marine Corps recruited vigorously to increase its ranks. Animal imagery was used to good advantage. This poster, with an armed Marine riding a large cat in search of adventure and travel, was one of many designs Flagg created.
Posters were widely used on both sides of the war to garner support, urge action, and boost morale. Like other recruiting posters, this one was customized for use at specific recruiting centers nationwide.
James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was a popular American artist, illustrator, and creator of comics and cartoons. During World War I, his famous Uncle Sam poster declared that "I want you." Flagg worked for The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and other publications. His portraits included Mark Twain and Jack Dempsey.
