During World War I, the 4th Marine Brigade fought against the Germans during their spring 1918 offensive at Belleau Wood, France. The Marines, who took heavy casualties, were credited with rousting the Germans from their well-defended strongholds. Reportedly, the enemy described their aggressive Marine opponents as "Teufelshunde," or devil dogs. The nickname is still used to describe the Marine Corps' fighting spirit. This recruiting poster features a tenacious Marine Corps bulldog chasing Kaiser Wilhelm's dachshund. There were several versions of this poster, customized for different devil dog recruiting stations around the country. C. B. Falls (1874-1960) illustrated books, magazines, and newspaper stories. Along with other members of the Society of Illustrators, Falls created posters that promoted recruitment and book drives for Americans fighting overseas during World War I.
