The Continental Congress approved the invasion of Canada (specifically the British Province of Quebec) on June 17, 1775. After two months of preparation Brigadier General Richard Montgomery and about 1,200 American troops left Crown Point in August to begin the invasion. Their first goal was to capture Fort St. John.
