Chappel’s panoramic drawing portrays the challenge facing the British, who had to overcome fortified positions on much higher ground. They decided to make a frontal assault, and suffered heavy casualties, finally prevailing in their third attack after the colonial militia ran out of ammunition. It was a pyric victory.
