Original work: after Alonzo Chappel, colorized
Alonzo Chappel's drawing is one of the more dramatic 19th century illustrations of an event the British downplayed as “the incident on King Street.” Like Revere’s original, it depicts this as a deliberate killing by British soldiers. Throughout the decade before the Revolutionary War began, the patriots, encouraged by Sam Adams in particular, were almost always better and quicker in marketing their version of events.
