Fr. Antonio Peyri, the popular senior missionary at Mission San Luis Rey for 33 years, built the largest and most successful California mission. When Fr. Peyri was forced to leave in 1832, after the Mexican takeover of California, hundreds of neophytes came to San Diego the day he was scheduled to depart to plead with him to stay.
