Coughlin donated this painting to the Marine Corps Publicity Bureau in June 1917. The “Recruiters’ Bulletin” noted that the painting “introduced up-to-date elements, the trench helmet, and Lewis machine gun.” The Marine Corps used this painting for the 1917 recruiting poster “Go over the Top with the U.S. Marines.” National Museum of the Marine Corps
